Meditation is Already Happening

“… meditation is actually something that’s already happening within us. There’s a natural state of stillness and quiet that’s already a part of our experience. Even in this very moment, if you care to notice, there’s a quality of quietness and stillness that’s sort of the context in which you reading my words is happening, in which your own thoughts and feelings are arising and passing away, that there is a greater context in which all of our experience arises within. And that context, if you were to feel into it or sense into it, using your body and your perception to feel, what does that context of quietness feel like? You may get a sense – it may be very momentary – but you get a sense that there is a context of pre-existing quietness or stillness that is a part of your experience.

So meditation isn’t really about trying to create stillness, it’s not really about trying to make your mind still, nor make your mind quiet, instead it’s introducing your mind and your awareness and your consciousness to a stillness and a quietness that is the very fabric of the context of your present experience. And so in this sense, meditation is about touching into that context that’s already there. So in that sense, it’s sort of the practice of acknowledgement, of acknowledging a quality of quietness that’s there, a quality of peace that’s there, even if your mind is quite active, or even if you feel agitated.” Adyashanti
